UNICOIL Sustainability

Sustainability for UNICOIL:

UNICOIL is driven by its commitment to sustainability that is deeply ingrained in its Corporate Philosophy and Operational Culture. As Stewards of the planet, we, the management team take our role, working actively towards reducing environmental impact (Carbon Foot Print, Consumption of Fossil fuel and natural resources) by adopting best practices in Environmental Protection, Occupational Health and Safety (HSE) and broader Sustainable Performance.

In pursuit of Continual improvement, UNICOIL explores various pathways, including Technological Advancements, Operational Efficiencies, Strategic partnerships, involving all stakeholders – (Suppliers, Contractors, Customers, Employees) to drive comprehensive Climate Action.

Journey of UNICOIL towards sustainability:

  • UNICOIL’s journey towards sustainability started more than two decades back when it decided to establish a Cold Mill Complex in year 2004.
  • Selection of European technology, involving Heat recovery systems in the Galvanizing line, Efficient Roll Coolant management system in the Cold Rolling Mill and Acid Recovery Plant (ARP) for conserving water, recover & re-use corrosive Hydrochloric Acid to avoid air and water pollution followed by the Waste water management Plant, is the foundation for the journey towards sustainability.
  • In the wake of dumping of inferior products into Saudi Arabia and lack of awareness among the regulatory agencies and the public at large, more than a decade back, UNICOIL made significant contributions towards public health & safety apart from safeguarding the Interests of the National industry.
  • The significant contributions include, proposing to Technical Committee of ASTM (American Society for Testing of Materials – based in USA), participating and following up till revision of relevant standards for inclusion of Safe Lead Limits in Zinc coating on the galvanized steel, in the relevant standard of ASTM A 653/653M and in the organic coating on pre-painted steel, in the relevant standard of ASTM A755/755M – A step regarded as a global outreach towards product sustainability.
  • Similar exercise was done with SASO (Saudi Arabian Standards Organization) for revision in the relevant standards for inclusion of Safe Lead limits.
  • Another significant revision proposed and followed up for inclusion with SASO, is mandatory minimum zinc coating on Galvanized steel of 60gsm(grams per square meter) in SASO ASTM A653/653M and mandatory minimum zinc coating mass of 90gsm (grams per square meter) for the Galvanized steel substrate used for the Pre-Painted Galvanized Steel in SASO ASTM A755/755M. This important revision is to ensure minimum product performance and service life – An important parameter of sustainability apart from protecting the Saudi community from inferior imported products.
  • Further, a mandatory clause was proposed and followed up for inclusion, in the relevant SASO standards for printing of the important product parameters at regular intervals along the full length of the finished coils – A step regarded as a powerful tool in ensuring product sustainability for Saudi Arabian consumers – A community outreach.
  • Extensive Educational Campaigns of “Know your Galvanized Steel” and Know Your Pre-Painted Galvanized steel” were conducted for the Community awareness and Well-being – Out of the Box actions towards Sustainability at large.
  • At Organizational level, UNICOIL received “Best Environmental Performance Award” from Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, multiple times, in the last decade, in recognition of UNICOIL’s best practices towards environment and pollution control.
  • As part of its Product development activity, UNICOIL developed following products with enhanced sustainability, in the last decade.
  • Trichrome Galvanized steel coils and sheets
  • Chrome free Pre-Painted Galvanized steel coils and sheets
  • Pre-Painted Galvanized Thermo-cool products for Energy savings when used as roofing/walling applications of buildings.
  • Pre-Painted Galvanized Anti Bacterial products for clean rooms.
  • Galvanized Anti-bacterial products for HVAC ducts and other relevant applications providing protection from Odor causing Bacteria and Molds.

  • UNICOIL invested in a Paint Viscosity and Temperature Control system, an American Technology, in its Color Coating line for maintaining constant viscosity during the organic coating – that also helped in reducing the VOC through reduction in thinner addition for control of Paint viscosity.
  • Installation of the state-of-the art paint mixing system, as part of strategic and technical partnership with an European organization, in year 2016 for producing small volumes of paint per batch has helped in reducing the paint for disposal to the approved local waste treating Organization’s.
  • UNICOIL developed local and overseas customers for the Iron Oxide Powder generated as a By-Product in the Acid Regeneration Plant – avoiding the necessity to dispose it as land fill at a cost.
  • Continuing the focus on sustainability, UNICOIL invested in Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer – from USA, in its color coating line, in year 2025 which is expected to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel significantly enabling UNICOIL to progress in its journey towards Sustainability.
  • Having Established as a World Class Organization , by obtaining multiple accreditations from Local, Regional and International certifying bodies,( in Quality, Safety, Environment, Information Security and Management, Laboratory accreditation, multiple quality Marks, Business Continuity Management and Great place to work) and increased exports to Europe and USA,  UNICOIL decided to participate in the ESG program from year 2024, a report of which was released in August 2025, along with the Environment Product Declaration, Health Product Declaration and GHG Emission Reports.
